Are Australians Ageing Gracefully? Vaseline Tells Us.

Product Talk by Nuffnang: Vaseline Dry Skin Conditioning Lotion

Australia has harsh weather conditions, most of the time dry regardless of extreme cold, hot or normal. Now, during winter it is hard to maintain skin’s smoothness and suppleness. Dry skin, also referred to as xerosis is a common problem for many people. Dry skin can also be itchy and become very sensitive, resulting in eczema and dermatitis. Symptoms such as itching, flaking of the skin, cracking and scaliness all point to you having very dry skin and this requires attention. The prevention of excessive loss of moisture to prevent dry skin is important to prevent further complication of dry skin. Our attempt to keep warm using central heating in the home, car and office contribute to drying out of the skin.

Intake of adequate fluids become very important as the dehydrating effect of heating needs to be over come and excessive loss of moisture needs to be replaced. How much water can one drink? I’m not a fan of drinking fluids so I “splat” on a lot of lotion on me daily.

Did you know? Simple daily routines, such as bathing and towel drying, may actually promote dry skin. Apparently it removes the skin’s ‘Acid Mantel’ and in the long run causes more moisture loss than gain.

Are Australians Ageing Gracefully?

New research by Vaseline reveals that nearly half of all Australians (48%) are ageing far from gracefully, with dry skin leading to the appearance of premature ageing such as sagging and wrinkling. A lack of daily moisturising from Aussie women contributes to the problem, and comparisons to other countries around the world make this even more apparent. Only 40% of Australians are using a body lotion regularly compared to over 89% in other markets like Brazil, South Africa & Philippines. This alarming situation is worsened once you add our harsh climate to the mix, with large fluctuations in humidity and temperature wreaking havoc on our skin and making it more susceptible to being dry, dull and therefore displaying signs of premature ageing.

The research study also highlighted that Australian women appear to have a non-preventative mind set about skin problems, meaning Aussie women will wait for problems to manifest and then escalate before they are treated. They are continuously experiencing problems with dry skin and cracked heels, yet they are not taking any preventive measures. Not only are Aussie women battling with dry skin, they have the highest number of dry skin related problems as a result.

My Feedback About the Lotion

I’d suggest placing the lotion on your work desk because you can see it, so you will remember to put it on and the smell lifts up your work area. Chances are – your colleagues might want to try it out too. Majority of my past and present colleagues both male and female have a bottle of lotion on their table. Packaging wise, great – unisex enough and not sissy at all for the metrosexual man.

I am a big fan of smell and I can say that it smells like a mixture of vanilla and orange. It smells great, very fresh with the citrus essence.

The lotion is not too thick and not too watery too. It is non greasy when I rub them onto my palms together. Skin feels soft afterwards. After 10 minutes, smell stills linger but it doesn’t grease up like most lotions do, so I’m not putting lotion stains on my computer keyboard!

I’d also add that this is great for pole-dancers (ahem, sorry I just had to!) because we usually stay away from lotion 12 hours before a pole practice in case we slip off the pole and if anything at all, we use a special type of drying lotion or wax to stick onto pole.

I’m all about vanity. Come on, in this modern day and age – I’d do what it takes to keep me looking under 30 before I reach 30…at all costs, at less than AUD$66 per year maybe, assuming you use six 750mL bottles per year? With lots of vitamins A, E and B5 – that’s all I need to know about the lotion I’m using.

What this lotion reminds me of? Home. My parents back in Malaysia have been using Vaseline for years now. It smells pretty similar but definitely improved, and more of a tangerine smell.

Hair Bow Super Cheat One

I was inspired by Cheeserland and decided to try out the Hair Bow today at work. Definitely spiced up my outfit and vice versa. I’m wearing a poncho top you can’t really see. Since I love tying my hair up in a bun, I thought I might as well make my “bun” look bigger. Well, in this case a hair bow Cheesie regards as “Hair Bow Super Cheat One”. How cute! I love it!

Cellnique Hydrates My Skin

Sponsored by Nuffnang

THE PROBLEM

My skin has been rather dehydrated lately. I have not been drinking enough water in this unpredictable weather between 15-40°C celcius. Isn’t that insane? 40°C can kill! My skin was begging for me to keep it hydrated. I had the opportunity to try out Cellnique products for two weeks and this range of products suits my “combination” type skin, ranging between dry to oily, depending on weather and location. That being said, if you are in Malaysia and you are mostly indoors under the air-conditioner, there is a high chance that your skin might be dry too.

I exercise proper facial care – cleansing, toning and moisturising. However, a lot of factors affect my skin too besides stress, genetics, environment, equipments (towels, sponges etc.) and other products I use on my skin; skincare or make-up.

In this photo below, you will see my dehydrated skin after a long day at work with foundation on. If you get closer to the mirror, you will notice how your skin has evolved with your age. This is not a haha-matter, but a real matter of concern because if anything at all, your skin can only get worse as you get older unless precautionary measures are taken.

THE SOLUTION

Cellnique recommended the following products to me; Intensive Hydrating Complex Serum, Vital Cellular Repair Emulsion and Vital Cellular Repair Masque. In this blog entry, I will highlight each product in detail. However please do note that this is purely my opinion and it might differ, based on different skin type and condition.

Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Complex Serum

This serum is a lightweight formulation with high concentration of Hyaluronic Acid and Essential Amino Acids. It helps bind moisture to restore elasticity of the skin to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Main active ingredients are sodium hyaluronate, essential amino acid, marine moistpatch and vitamin B5 (Panthenol).

I use this in the morning and at night after cleansing and toning my skin. I’d pump out a small pea-sized drop onto my hand before distributing it onto my face and neck evenly, in up and outward stroking movement to avoid wrinkles! Indeed it helps, with your hand movement; you don’t want to drag your skin down and without realising, you would be doing that 730 times a year (365 x 2 times a day). Imagine the damage to your skin afterwards.

Have a look at my video which explains more about the reaction I have, the texture of the Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Complex. Sticky? Hear me out here.

Excuse my chopped-off head in the video. I don’t know why my Movie Editor does that. Oh well.

The verdict: My skin feels tight after application. At first it was a bit sticky but it dried up really fast afterwards because it locks in moisture to accomodate for your application of the Vital Cellular Repair Emulsion afterwards. You won’t feel its existence at all. It smells good, like your favourite glue when you were young. The bottle is not too big. It is not recommended to use a lot on your skin (more doesn’t mean better for your skin). I did not have a reaction from this product; if anything – my skin felt really tight and pores closed up.

Cellnique Vital Cellular Repair Emulsion

This next product is a winner. Specially designed to repair damaged cells and promote healing process, this formulation protects all skin types including sensitive skin from environment aggressions and provides relief to dry and dehydrated skin conditions. Sounds like it’s for me! Yes, it’s for me! It repairs damaged cells and promotes healing process, softens skin, acts as an antioxidant and whitening agent and is anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory.

It is yellowish white, creamy and smells fruity with its perilla extract, vitamin C and vitamin E. For hygiene purposes, do ensure that your fingers are really clean when you dig for the cream. It is best if you use a spatula to scoop the emulsion.

I applied this on the T-zone of my face and distributed the emulsion evenly on my skin.

And since it was in the morning, I let the emulsion sit on my face for a few minutes before applying my cream-based foundation on my skin (over my emulsion + serum). Give it a try and see what’s best for you. I’m not a fan of make-up base and always prefer to use something hydrating for my skin.

The verdict: It felt really soft on my skin and absorbed really well. My skin felt fresh immediately like as if I sprayed some water onto my face. After a few seconds, there was a cold sensation on my forehead (maybe I had applied a little extra). It was a nice feeling. It’s not sticky at all. However, a little extra application would turn it into an exfoliator. For some reason, my dead skin cells were removed immediately and I had to rub off my dry skin that were coming off my face, those I could not remove even from cleansing and scrubbing. After 2 weeks, the dead skin cells on my skin were removed and my skin felt like baby’s again.

Vital Cellular Repair Masque

This gentle, nourishing and repairing mask is specially enriched with potent nutrients of to promote healthy skin and to further protect your skin from pollutants and environmental allergen assault. Suitable for all skin types including post-operation skin. This is not the typical cucumber mask that dries up on your skin and once you smile, your entire mask cracks.

This mask aims to increase and retain skin moisture, restores collagen and elastin content to fight against ageing and enlarged pores, heals scars and repairs damaged cells, preventing further damage.

With pineapple scent, it is creamy in medium green tone (looks like cucumber mask – but remember, it does not crack!) and is nourishing and soothing on the skin. It contains ingredients like yeast beta glucan, papaya extract, marine collagen and elastin.

I use this mask once a week when I am completely relaxed at home. With hair pulled back, my face is washed and dried well.

Then, using a mask brush, I dipped it into the mask tub and started applying it onto my face.

It is very important to apply starting from your jaw line and upwards and even neck (if you wish). I could possibly allow myself to be on generous in my application, depending on how thick you prefer it on your skin. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes and then wash it off (with water only) before drying your face with a clean towel.

It smelled so fresh, even Chutney wanted a taste of it!

The verdict: There was a tingling sensation at first with the reaction on my skin but after 3 minutes, my skin was fine. I had two pimples on my nose prior to this and this product must have helped dry up the blackheads, I managed to remove them and my pain was gone! I had a few more pimples appear; must have been the reaction of the mask removing all my skin’s impurities. After a good wash, my skin felt so soft and smooth like baby’s butt. Oops, did I say that?

This is me after two-weeks using all of the above diligently. It’s a nice brand. Give it a try.

My New Haircut!

This is a video log about my haircut earlier.

I’m not a fan of hair salons (yeah, bad family habit of saying saloooooooons instead of sah-lawns!). I don’t understand how people can go there on a weekly basis or every few days just to get a hairwash, blowdry, treatment, dye and so on. I find salons quite expensive.

However, I must say that I truly enjoyed my experience earlier at the hair salon being pampered. Wow, hairwash chairs (hair under the tap) are now flexible and adjustable according to your size and height! Impressive. Of course, it was a service well worth it.

Maybe when I earn enough money, I will treat myself to a once-a-month hair treatment (or something), just like getting a full body massage.

Updated!!!

I thought this might be useful for you, my dear readers. We may or may not already know this but once again we’re reminded (I am!). I forget the effects of certain hair-dyes to achieve the look I want.

Feedback via Facebook from Michelle M. Rietveld, my former Curtin course-mate in Perth who has worked as a hairdresser previously for a few years:

(Michelle starts by updating on baby and life in Perth)

I love your new haircut by the way! Thought I should let you know that you shouldn’t try to colour your own hair again especially with the hair colour that you buy over the counter. They are usually pretty bad and would not give you the colour that you want if you pick the wrong shade if you refer the shade from the box. It all depends on the history of your hair colour i.e. have you ever had your hair chemically treated before…if yes, when was it last chemically treated…what’s your base colour on your regrowth and the chemically treated side of your hair…how many shades lighter do you want your hair colour to be…what is your hair condition and texture…etc… Never buy those ‘organic/plant’ based colour or henna because they don’t do much different, they will change the texture of your hair and they will make it even harder for you to colour your hair next time you want to colour your hair professionally.

I think that your hair colour looks great as it is without any colour. But if you do plan to colour your hair next time…make sure you pick a really good salon who have a good colour technician who is passionate about colouring. They will then be able to give you a good advise.

Just in case you’re wondering why I’m giving you such a long winded advice, I used to be a hairdresser before I decided to pursue my degree and was a colour technician…I just realised that you’ve been to my house a few times before when I used to cut your friend’s hair! hahaha…

One more thing…you know how you said that your hair is limp and fine…your type of hair shampoo and conditioner will also affect your hair condition. Make sure you don’t buy Pantene or any of those shampoo and conditioner that you can buy from the supermarket. The best for me is Redken products. You can buy them from the salon or Price Attack. They may cost a bit more but they last longer and they are much better. Never apply conditioners onto your scalp and only run them through your hair with your fingers…only apply very little of them like a 20cents coin size or less now that your hair is shorter.

Anyway…hope what I’ve said above helps…I think i can go on and on when it comes to hair…hahaha…hope its not boring you! Take care and miss talking to you too! xx

Never Speak Too Soon!

I was just reminiscing those days of how I recovered from those days when I had pimples, during my earlier years hitting puberty. It was not an easy period with people telling me how much they pity my skin. Eventually one day, my skin just started getting smooth. I was really relieved. That day has been many years now.

Just after thinking about how smooth my skin was, I immediately got a big pool of pimples on my face. It’s not to a point where people would really notice it but oh golly, it feels weird when I run my finger down my cheeks. Gulp!

I can’t speak too soon, ever! When I say I will not get sick and am really healthy, I immediately get sick the next day. -_-

Okay, time to stop drinking sweets and drink more water. Must have been the lack of sleep too.
