Meeting Ryan Higa

Stayed up a little late to meet the nigahiga, YouTube sensation. We’re talking about YouTube views by the millions. We girls absolutely adore him. What’s he like in person? Calm, subdued and polite. Must have had a long day, and probably still trying to adjust to the cold weather in Melbourne and the time difference too. All energy’s gone onto the video camera.

Agents of Secret Stuff – by Ryan Higa

It is 3am in the morning, I’m compromising my practice with Jen tomorrow.

My weight would be double this tomorrow if I don’t go sleep now!

Teehee!

LO#2: Alumbra (3rd Anniversary)

The first Ladies Only #1 was a dinner followed by some drinks at Emerald Peacock. This time we were off to Alumbra, Forever Friday, Asian Night. The theme was ‘a night in Hollywood’ for its 3rd birthday celebration. Ladies were to dress in cocktail dresses and men in bow-ties. There were a significant number of people who really dressed up and those who dressed in their favourite Hollywood characters could enter the club for free. Everyone looked great. What makes a great night out is good-looking people (so many hot chicks and guys), fun company, great ambience. I am guessing that the crowd is generally between the ages of 22-30, mostly university students / young working adults.

My girls and I were in for a great night out, dancing the night away.

The bar as you enter the club.

Our first drink.

People danced the night away.

Bartenders in cute hats.

Goldfinger girls.

Us girls – Jia Meei, Liz, Xie Wenn, Ray, myself and Esther.

The night got fuzzy.

As we danced away.

See this photographer guy? Guess what he was trying to capture.

See this Caucasian guy, guess what he was looking at grinning away?

Yes, that’s right.

Then we left to have supper at 4am.

Fried mi goreng. Greasy, but satisfies the tums.

Roti Jala and chicken.

Yum.

Great night out. More updates here.

Rotary Camberwell Sunday Market, Melbourne

Camberwell Market located at Station Street in Camberwell, Victoria is a large flea market with 380 stalls conducted by the Rotary Club of Balwyn to raise funds for a wide range of charities. For my friends and I, it meant being able to get rid of our unwanted or unused clothes, see other people buy off our clothes (not for much but at least something) and knowing that the clothes are going somewhere.

Each stall cost $55 to be split amongst those of us who want to share a stall. We had a unit number and had to book months in advance to secure a spot. We could also rent racks and tables for our stalls. The few of us arrived at 6am in the morning and had people rummage through our things while we were still unpacking. We were advised that these were other vendors who would pick up the best of our things for cheap to sell them at their own stalls. Well, for us first-timers or one-offs (we know we’ll be back only next year), it was worthwhile for us to get rid of things quickly. Busy hours were between 6-9am. From 9-11am, it was rather quiet before it picked up again at 12pm before stalls closed at 12.30pm and that’s where the real bargains were. The cooler folks come by at 9am onwards.

Vietnamese lady: One-dalla, one-dalla!
Me: Sorry, can’t do. 5 dollars.
Vietnamese lady: One-dalla!!!!!!!!! (keeps item in her bag)
Me: Okay whatever. -_-

For people who want to sell, you have to expect to sell your products no more than $30 per item even if it’s a real Louis Vuitton bag. My second hand sneakers were sold at around $20 and used canvas bags at $10.

It was a vibrant flea market.

People were selling goods of all sorts including cutleries and glassware!

Flowers were in abundance too.

Some people sell on a weekly basis permanently.

Some buskers livened up the place.

Want some vintage bling-blings?

Or innocent scary dolls?

Or not so innocent dolls in these adult magazines? Playboy? Penthouse?

The sun was blazing hot, but it was lovely.

This is Kermit the frog, our official mascot.

This was our booth. Full of clothes.

Rachel was offering free clothes too. Funny how one lady picked something up and asked Rachel how much, so Rachel said $3 and she paid for it because she didn’t read the “Free” sign.

Aha, that’s me sorting things out, manning the front of the booth while Josiah was behind the main table.

We girls like to get rid of our clothes to make way for new clothes woohoo! Thanks Rachel for initiating this. ;)

Xie Wenn joined in the fun too and had her clothes on the ground.

Multi-cultural crowd. The market was vibrant!

This is me explaining how good the Quantum Bracelet is and managed to sell it at $20. Kermit looked helpless.

One of the best parts of my market experience – I did not sell my leather Zara shoes I bought from Spain. Phew! When I cut off my bunions, I am going to fit into those lovely shoes again, unless you’d like to purchase these shoes at $60 (including shipping – Australia & Malaysia only), negotiable.

Chutney’s uncle’s face on Esther’s blanket. Lol!

I would thank everyone regardless for dropping by our booth. Sunday market’s meant to be fun.

But for some others, it meant that he had reached his quota for the day so he deserved a rest. :P

I think my hubby and I make a good team. We sorted out clothes in preparation of the event, woke up early to go to the market and sold things off – made abit of profit too. I think we work really well together. :)

Yup, we were tired.

Yep, just wanted to get rid of my coins from the “one-dalla” ladies’ change I received.

This is how you can get to the Camberwell Sunday market.

CNY BBQ Picnic at Alexandra Avenue

It rained, then it stopped. Then it rained again. We went back and forth, wondering if our BBQ would happen since it was cancelled the day before (Saturday). That Sunday, the weather was unpredictable. When the clouds moved away, the sun burnt us, otherwise we would be freezing away. However, we still went ahead with the barbeque. In any case, the guys marinated some meat. I fried my rice only in the morning, having minced my garlic much earlier. Amber’s chocolate muffins were prepared and could be refrigerated.

This is one of the yummiest BBQs I’ve ever had, with real quality food, home-made thanks to Rachel and Henry the organisers!

First on the list, is “diam-diam ubi” Mr. Kenny Thian who prepared these kebabs. The lamb meat were tender because of the yoghurt he mixed in (I didn’t know that!). Mr. Thian also finds cleaning rather thereupetic. I love BBQs, we discover so much hidden talent from these folks.

Amber made these yummy chocolate muffins with strawberries on top. Yummy! I’ve had Amber’s cakes since 15 years old :)

Gong Xi, Gong Xi!

Next up, we have Justin Kui.

Justin prepared these yummy char-siew. Really what I was looking for this CNY!

It was sunny, hot and freezing cold! How bizarre?

Xie Wenn (above) and Bernard (below, right) prepared salsa dips with bruschetta and some lin gao. Yummy!

Salsa on bruschetta bread.

Fried lin-gao.

I prepared garlic and shiitake mushroom rice. I sprinkled some pre-fried garlic onto the freshly cooked garlic and mushroom rice for added taste. It was strong, but went really well with beer.

I think that’s it – for my Chinese New Year celebrations. Pretty non-existent. I didn’t go into the city this time around because I imagine it would be the same every year. Oh well. I still had fun with my friends. :)

Halloween 2010

I didn’t grow up with Trick or Treat in my hometown in Malaysia. Halloween never existed at all. In fact, Halloween started quite recently, when clubs encourage more dress-ups to hype up clubbing events. Zouk in Singapore is a huge do annually.

Last year, I went as a nurse and a cat knowing by right, Halloween is about being scary – dressing up to the theme, not mimicking celebrities and so on, but whatever – everyone’s doing it these days and it’s just so commercialised so I didn’t bother putting blood on my face, although I could have. I think I might put in more effort next year.

This year, I decided to go as Madonna. I didn’t plan for it. I went to The Costume Factory and Josiah was holding up the cones bustier, so I did a quick google search on Madonna and found an image of her in Blonde Ambition. I couldn’t find an appropriate wig so I thought this one might work it (a little more volume than Madonna’s original though).

I tried to mimic her make-up as well – you probably won’t be able to tell in this photo below (thickened eyebrows, red lipstick, blusher etc.) Unfortunately, I didn’t create a gap in my teeth (like Madonna’s) but I did draw a mole on the right of my upper lip. Not evident enough, argh!

I tried to get into character by watching Madonna’s video clip here:

Unfortunately, my chesty cough didn’t allow me to sing “Like A Virgin”.

Josiah and I wanted to get a couple outfit initially but after I decided on Madonna’s cones, we decided that we should both go as King and Queen of Pop, so Josiah went as Elvis.

Josiah – “Thank you very much, ladies and gentleman! Love me tender…”

It was an exclusive party I hosted with David the Ninja, a small group to share some fun just before we headed off to Lavish to join in their fun.

Everyone dressed up so nicely, I love it!!!!

Rachel, the awesome one who created these comparison photos.

And many more photos to follow from the night.

Okay, maybe I did try to get into character for a while.

Lovely silhouette.

David the Ninja!

Those who dressed up could walk into Lavish for free before midnight, so we thought “Why not?” and decided to dance our feet away.

There were some pretty scary characters out there!

Sadako!

The return of “IT”. Hands down, he’s got the best Halloween outfit ever and he was creeping through the club scarily, not making swift movements. Soooooo scary!

He actually stood in this pose (“IT” the clown on the right) for a few minutes without moving!

It was so fun that night, it was spooky! Thanks everyone for a great night.

And…

I went as Madonna, not Marilyn Monroe or Lady Gaga! :(
