The Sun & Sea

The Beach @ Hyatt Regency, Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan on 12 March 2009.

Sorry for the lack of blogging for the past few days. I had a lovely time with Michelle Tan at Kuantan and it was a free trip for both of us, that was what made it all the more interesting. We were just so thankful to God, for someone passing on the trip to her and she invited me and also by chance where I forgot to bring my Canon camera charger back from Australia, I had to use my dad’s Sony camera but realised that he gave me the memory card that could contain only 20 photos. Grrr, but it all worked out so well because I could use that camera to download Michelle’s camera photos into my computer and take tons more. Everything just worked out so well and we had so much fun together.

Well, what’s a holiday without a good camera to commemorate the good trip right?

More news and photos soon. Need to run some errands over this weekend.

The Optimistic Kim

I never say never ever. My personality shouts optimism and I am full of adventure. I’ll let tomorrow take me and everyday will be an adventure. Just like my bold step in leaving my job in advertising back in Malaysia to move to Australia immediately last year. I got married to a Malaysian Olympic Track Cyclist and I was willing to sacrifice my career to fulfil his in his next bid to obtain gold in his third Olympics, London Olympics 2012. At the moment, I am studying Graphic Design in Melbourne on a Student Visa while playing doting wife to my sportsman husband. If you were to ask me how sporty I am compared to my husband, I would say I am nowhere near his athleticism but I am courageous in alot of other ways. I don’t cringe at the sight of cockroaches, I am used to my bruises from pole-dancing and branch scratches from hiking, falling is a way of being able to get up again and say “let’s do it again!”. I am also not afraid of heights! I am mentally strong and nothing gets me down. In fact, if something goes wrong, I’ll just laugh it over. I am physically strong from my 10 years in ballet, my regular exercises and latest passion in pole-dancing as a sport.

Blogger Kim

The writing passion in me came alive as a little girl and I started blogging in 2003 on Xanga and eventually obtained my own kimong.com in 2005. To date, my blog attracts 2000 over unique readers per day and mostly 80% of my readership comes from Malaysia. I am a lifestyle blogger and have been occasionally invited to review products and services to share with my blog readers. In 2008, Hewlett-Packard sent me to Tokyo to review their latest HP Mini 1000 laptop designed by Vivienne Tam. I attended the fashion show and interviewed the designer herself. In the following year, I was invited to give a presentation to Leo Burnett and a media workshop on “how I monetize my blog” and “blogging responsibly with Canon camera” as Canon’s blogger ambassador. I was also featured in FHM magazine and the front cover of Clive magazine as a Malaysian blogger.

My blog style is simple, legible and neat. I use proper English as I speak and cater to the mass. I have a range of topics that depend on my mood (you can view the various categories on the right sidebar of my blog) like Travel, Cooking, Food, Health, Performing Arts, Thoughts, Fashion and so on.

Through this competition, if I get selected, I would of course use blogging to illustrate the wonders of WA, take lots of photos and review my experience about WA. Plus, my efforts don’t just end at blogging (writing and posting videos). I also have 550 Twitter fans to date @kimongsk and my tweets automatically bounces off onto my facebook.com/kimongsk where my 1750 Facebook friends can view my status updates.

The presenter in Kim

“Mic test 1, 2,3. Hi, g’day ya all! My name is Kim Ong and I’m about to take you through the wonders of what Western Australia has to offer. It is beyond “beeee-yooooo-ti-fulllllllll” and I really mean it!”

I joined a hosting competition in 2007 and emerged as a finalist. It helped me so much, I learnt how to face the camera more confidently. I am not shy and am able to enunciate my word properly. Otherwise, you may want to edit the audio and feature my voice-over recording instead! *winks* How about that?

I have presented onstage hosting a local beauty contest run by a tech magazine in 2009 and was ING’s F1 Malaysian website voice-over / female online robot back in 2008.

Who I would want to take with me on this trip to WA?

There’s a reason why my father sent me to Curtin Uni to get a degree, he wanted me to see the beauty of WA. He knew what WA had to offer. I caught a glimpse of it but did not manage to explore further to save money as a student back then.

This opportunity would give me a chance to bring my father Ong Sam Keat with me to tour WA together, as the coolest 64-year old fit, ruggard and good-looking man. You need a contrast of both opinions of the wise (dad) and perky one (me!), but you also need a good team so why not a father-daughter team?

Apart from that, if given a journey-leg that features wine, my dad would be able to provide his review as a wine connoisseur as he has been in the F&B industry (in the largest brewery company in Malaysia) for 26 years and is freelancing in that area still, as a retiree. He not only plays tennis twice a week for a few hours, he is an avid traveller and if not in the F&B industry, he would have been a tour guide. Maybe WA can help my father achieve his other ambition! Apart from tennis, he can swim very well and loves fishing. My father tells me I am the son he never had (besides his two son-in-laws), because we share a lot in common when it comes to wine, dine and appreciating art. He is an avid antique-collector and loves driving around in his Volkswagen Kombi! I am the exact replica of my father when it comes to personality. You’ll see our dynamics if you see us on screen.

Why Western Australia and which one is my desired choice?

Oh, I am really spoilt for choice! I’ll just be very honest about my experience in Perth. I spent one year in Curtin University (oh I miss those days!), stayed at Erica Underwood House in a 2+1 twinning programme in Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing & Public Relations). The places I have travelled to in Perth? I will name all that I have travelled to.

- Fremantle flea market & Ciccerello’s (yum yum!)
- Cottesloe beach
- C Restaurant (revolving restaurant)
- Hotham Way (for a Public Relations project back then)
- Chinatown
- King’s Park
- Swan River cruise
- Perth Zoo

That’s it? All in a year, Kim? Where have you been, Kim? Yes, I was quite tight when it came to money and being WA itself as a student was a joy. Now it is the perfect time to experience WA with no boundaries!

I would love to take my father on a trip on the Northern Coast Escape because we think we are fit for all the activities and that they would be really fun and exciting! Maybe I’m not so good at fishing, but my father can teach me how to and I have no fear for heights, so a camel ride will be fun. Good for my father because he used to play polo in his heydays. Bush-walking would be really fun too. I love taking photos of little insects and can learn more about the eco! My skin is so prone to bites, I have no problem ignoring them.

Why choose us for this trip (chosen leg) or any other given legs?

Mainly because:

  1. You can save on my airfare. You may transport me from Melbourne to Perth. I will meet my father (based in Kuala Lumpur) in Perth.
  2. I have an Australian Student Visa valid till 2012. Can save money on my visa!
  3. If you require me to be in Malaysia for audition (if I can’t do it virtually), prize presentation or travel from Malaysia, let me know really early so I can book a flight back to Malaysia for this competition’s purpose. This is how serious I am about this competition.
  4. We are totally up for it, fit and in perfect health condition (touch wood).
  5. I will be your number 1 blogger and broadcaster.
  6. My father and I will be the perfect team.

Fair dinkum!

Of course I removed my braces. My teeth are in order now, not like the Tasmanian Devil’s! This photo was taken at the Healesville Zoo in Melbourne.

I am not afraid of injuries! Check out this youtube video of mine where I thought I was able to catch up on the tricycle with my track cyclist husband, back in 2007 in Bakersfield, California. I am really not quite sure what attracted people to this video but it sure made 39,325 people click on it! I was surprised! Have a good laugh at this one.

Maybe I should illustrate my voice. This is not the best one because I almost could not hear myself and was practically shouting into my Canon Ixus 200 IS during the track cycling competition at the UCI Track World Cup in Melbourne recently.

How about this one taken in Melbourne earlier today during a hailstorm.
